The year must have flown by for Marika Hackman. Not only did the countryside turned Big Smoke singer-songwriter release her debut mini-album That Iron Taste in 2013; she toured with the likes of Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling, featured on VEVO, worked with producer Charlie Andrews, and is about to head out on her first UK headline tour with Sivu. We tipped her for the top at the end of last year, and although she’s undeniably made moves to claim her title, her new Sugar Blind EP suggests the best is yet to come.
There couldn’t be a more apt title for these four songs. Decorated by Marika’s trademark willowy vocal, the lyrics revolve around the sickly sweet and outright decrepit. Honey and cinnamon drench a relationship, leave dental decay in their wake, and see Marika emerges spitting and snarling, then aged and resigned. This isn’t a concept album, but the songs – “Cinnamon”, “Itchy Teeth”, “Wolf” and “81” respectively – have been perfectly placed, preaching a tale only Marika could sing to the modern music scene.
The maturity of the release is thanks to Hackman’s new found cohesiveness in the face of variety. On That Iron Taste, magical though the songs may be, there’s a sense that Hackman is struggling to break away from a specific type of song. On Sugar Blind, she successfully touches all four corners of her category, but faces the centre point the entire time. “81” is the most breathtaking excursion; a song so beautifully wrapped in British folklore you’ll have a hard time stopping yourself from lying down and announcing your demise during its two and a half minutes. It feels as though this is the moment Marika’s been working up to all year, but at the same time it’s unbelievably exciting. If she can do this with a guitar and some studio time, she can do anything. Elsewhere “Cinnamon” and especially “Wolf” rally the upbeat to command the attention of Stealing Sheeps’ fan base. “Itchy Teeth” is the most loyal to Marika’s initial sound; hollow and frighteningly detached, but also enrapturing and vital.
Andrews introduces a crisp, layered sheen to Marika’s previously lo-fi direction, giving her a little needed but appreciated boost onto greener pastures. His production skills certainly come into play on Sugar Blind, but the talent at hand is solely Marika’s. Sugar Blind is an essential gift to the world from a very unique artist.
